Oregon Charter Academy and Online School Learning

There is no tuition. We are a free public charter school welcoming all kindergarten through 12th grade students in Oregon to enroll. Additionally, the Chromebook and all books and learning materials are provided at no cost.

Each student receives a Chromebook at no cost at the time of enrollment. Families enrolling multiple students will receive a Chromebook for each child. Oregon Charter Academy is an online school accessed by computer, and the provided Chromebook or another internet-connected device is required to attend.

Students may access Canvas, our online learning platform (LMS), at any location with a reliable internet connection. It’s possible to attend school at home, when visiting loved ones, or even while traveling.

The amount of live classes and asynchronous work a student has depends on grade level. On average, elementary students have an average of 2 Live Classes per day, Monday through Thursday.
Middle school students have 2-3 live classes per day, Monday through Thursday. Each class is 45-60 minutes in length, on average.
High school students have 2-4 live classes per day, Monday through Thursday. Similar to middle school classes, each is 45-60 minutes in length, on average.

Physical materials may be utilized to ensure the best outcomes for student learning. Use of physical materials varies by grade level and course. All required materials are provided at no cost.

Our digital educational platform, Canvas, offers limited download capabilities so some course materials can be viewed offline. All interactive capabilities, however, require an internet connection. Students must be online to participate in classes and to create and submit work.

Oregon Charter Academy offers a robust and dynamic education from home , so your child can learn in a safe environment. Caring, qualified, and Oregon certified teachers are dedicated to your child’s success and offer consistency in learning. At Oregon Charter Academy, your child will have access to support and resources, such as a robust Special Education Program, counselors/advisors, and safe spaces for socialization through clubs and sanctioned field trips.

At ORCA, students have a variety of socialization opportunities, both virtual and in person. Students have daily live interactions with their teachers and peers during Live Classes. They can also join clubs, which meet virtually, to make friends with similar interests. ORCA families have the opportunity to attend in-person and virtual field trips throughout the year where students can socialize, learn, and have fun.

Yes, Oregon Charter Academy is fully accredited. We go through the accreditation process every five years, and were last audited in 2021 by Cognia, formerly AdvancED. We scored a 377.50 Index of Education Quality, which are awarded on a scale of between 100 and 400. We were also named a Cognia School of Distinction; we’re one of 80 schools internationally to receive this honor, and the only one on the West Coast.

All teachers are licensed and certified to teach within the state of Oregon. Students and families regularly have the opportunity to meet staff face-to-face in educational and social contexts.

Our curriculum emphasizes the Four C’s: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. These future-focused skills will serve students as they pursue college programs and enter careers. At the same time, a virtual learning environment prepares students with 21st-century professional skills, including online communication, keyboarding, cloud-based word processing, virtual collaboration, and more.

Yes, Oregon Charter Academy’s dynamic curriculum and Canvas allow for fully differentiated classrooms. All students work at appropriate levels of instruction, whether above, below, or on a level with age-group peers. Teachers respond actively, adapting instruction to meet students’ evolving needs and providing advanced support to those with 504s or Individual Education Programs (IEPs).

Like all Oregon public schools, Oregon Charter Academy proctors Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) state testing in mandated grade levels and academic areas. We also administer three in-house diagnostic assessments in reading and mathematics that ensure instruction is aligned with current academic needs.

Yes, students at Oregon Charter Academy can take honors and AP courses. High school students can even earn college credit while completing high school courses through our College Now program.
