Alternative Ed - Virtual GED Preparation Program

While remaining students of the district, ORCA supports districts by serving students who are:

  • Expelled;

  • Medically fragile;

  • Full virtual GED program; or need

  • Per seat Credit Recovery program.

Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) provides districts a virtual option for students in need of high school credit recovery, alternative placement due to behavioral or medical needs, as well as an option for a GED preparation program leading students to a GED. ORCA provides access to its platforms, curriculum, teachers, and  a Chromebook for GED tract students and full-time alternative placement students. ORCA is a highly rated and experienced virtual option and recently received an accreditation score of 377.5 out of 400.

ORCA’S ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM HAS TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS:

  1. Per-seat access to credit recovery courses: Courses run four weeks in length per course. The district and ORCA will work together on balancing workload for students as they remain students within the district. The district is responsible for providing student technology in the credit recovery program.

  2. Full-time access for behavioral or medical placement: Districts can contract with ORCA for students in need of placement out of their community school due to issues such as expulsion or medical issues. ORCA provides access to all of its platforms, curriculum, teachers and supplies every student with a Chromebook and hands-on materials when appropriate. This program is not designed to serve students shifting between virtual and building programs throughout the year; rather, a longer term solution (on a per quarter basis at minimum) for students in need of an alternative school setting. The district simply provides a safe place for students to learn or can ensure the student can access learning in the home environment.

ORCA’S GED PROGRAM:

Oregon Charter Academy provides a GED preparation program which includes access to all of it’s platforms, GED preparation curriculum, teachers and supplies every student with a Chromebook. ORCA supports students in daily exam preparation coursework, signing up for the first attempt of the GED, as well as covering the cost of the first attempt of the virtual GED exam. Students will be responsible for any additional attempts if needed. Districts will pay on a per student basis. Students will spend a minimum of one quarter in the preparation program and a maximum of one school year. ORCA will work with the family to sign the student up for the virtual GED exam once the student demonstrates readiness at any point between the first quarter and the full school year.
