School Summary

Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) is a virtual public charter school serving students in grades K–12 throughout the state. Teachers at ORCA are student-focused, adapting to meet students’ educational needs through personalized learning using our high-quality curriculum and the teaching of 21st-century skills. ORCA is authorized by the Santiam Canyon School District and is governed by its own independent charter school board. The school has been in operation since 2005 and is accredited through Cognia, formerly AdvancED.

Oregon Charter Academy students will utilize 21st Century Skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking to prepare for the rapidly changing economies of tomorrow.

School Mission

The mission of Oregon Charter Academy is to prepare all students for success in a global society through an inclusive, rigorous, academic environment where students have daily live interaction with highly qualified teachers and continuous access to curriculum. Oregon Charter Academy staff partners with families in a transparent, collaborative school environment to support all students in their academic journey. 

Position Responsibilities 

Volunteering their time to serve the school, school board members' duty will be to represent all students, staff, and members of the school community as they work with other board members to craft policy. As an education board member, you will help shape tomorrow’s citizens and leaders.

Qualifications of Directors: 

All directors must be over the age of eighteen (18),  and qualified to serve as a director of the virtual public charter school under applicable law. The qualifications for directors include the ability to attend board meetings, a willingness to actively support and promote the Oregon Charter Academy, and a dedication to the educational endeavors of the school(s). 

Role and Responsibilities:

  1. Approve the vision and goals for the school and monitor progress towards the goals.

  2. Be aware of policies, laws, and regulations that may impact the work of the school; and implement policies that help improve the work of the school. (Review, revise, and adopt policies).

  3. Hire and evaluate the school’s executive director.

  4. Adopt and maintain an annual budget that is aligned with the vision of the school and allocate resources to help meet student needs.

  5. Serve as leaders and representatives of the community and as advocates for students and the school ;

  6. Foster board team effectiveness by:

  • Actively participating in board meetings (regular and special);

  • Participating in school board member professional development;

  • Participating in board team self-evaluations;

  • Preparing adequately for meetings.

Time commitment:

Oregon Charter Academy board members will attend a monthly meeting (1-2 hours) nine times during the calendar year, with occasional special board meetings. In addition, board members are to review the board packet prior to each meeting and support the work on various committees as needed. 

Selection Process and Contract Term

A designated board committee will review all resumes and interest submissions. The final one to two finalists will be reviewed by the full board. The selected new member of the Oregon Charter Academy Board of Directors will first serve a two-year term.
