Mason: 4th Grade

REASON FOR ONLINE SCHOOL: SAFETY

About Mason

Mason used to attend a brick-and-mortar school, but during his most recent school year he felt increasingly unsafe in the classroom. Mason and his family made the decision to transfer to Oregon Charter Academy, and now he thrives in the online classroom, and his family is thankful for the ability to control his environment and increase his safety.

A Typical Day

Live Classes are only a part of a student’s day at Oregon Charter Academy. In our program, students complete much of their work asynchronously, on their own schedule. They can reach out to their teachers for one-on-one support whenever they need it. Continue reading to see what Mason’s daily schedule typically looks like!

DAY OF THE WEEK: WEDNESDAY

8:00 AM

Mason wakes up most days around 8. He eats breakfast and gets ready for the day.

8:30 AM

At 8:30, Mason sits down with his learning coach for the day (today, it’s his grandma). Together, they make a to-do list for the day. They review his course pages to help with planning and once organized, Mason identifies some assignments he can complete on his own, and gets started.

9:30 AM

It’s time for live class! Mason showed up early today, because his teachers often allow for social time before class. Mason has a predictable schedule with live class each day, except on Friday when he only has asynchronous work to complete. In 4th grade, live classes are 30 minutes long with additional support time offered at the end of class, as needed. At 9:30, Mason attends his Core live class.

10:00 AM

Today, Mason stayed after class to ask about a concept he was struggling with. When finished, Mason takes a short break for a snack and finishes an assignment he started that morning. He then gathers materials needed for his next live class.

11:00 AM

Mason is back in live class! At 11:00, he attends his math class. Today, the class is using fraction cubes, one of the many fun materials sent in the curriculum kits that students receive at the beginning of the year.

11:30 AM

Live class has finished for the day and Mason uses this time to work on a science project he started at the beginning of the week. He is really excited to share it with his class the following week.

12:00 PM

Mason takes a break to make lunch. He and his learning coach prepare lunch together and talk about the concepts discussed in live class that day.

12:30 PM

After eating, Mason heads outside to play and earn some of his weekly PE minutes, which he then records in his log to be turned in at the end of the week.

1:00 PM

Mason sits down with his learning coach to go over an assignment he was struggling with earlier in the day. Once finished, he continues working through his to-do list, taking breaks as needed.

2:00 PM

Mason attends “Arts and Crafts” club where he is able to share a piece of art he has been creating in his free time. This club is extra special as it is advised by one of Mason’s former teachers and he gets to see some of his classmates from last year.

3:00 PM

Mason is finished with his school day. He cleans up his workspace and gets organized for the following day. Mason checks in with his learning coach to see if all assignments on his to-do list are complete. He and his learning coach check the gradebook in Canvas for any missing assignments.

5:00 PM

After some down time, Mason’s mom and dad arrive home from work. Free time!

Mason’s Schedule

Mason is enrolled in 3 courses at Oregon Charter Academy, which is standard for his age and grade. Some of these courses meet live multiple times per week; others meet only once per week. When Mason is not attending Live Class, there is other assigned work for him to complete asynchronously.
