Exceeding Educational Standards

As a K-12 online charter school, we understand that college and career preparedness go beyond rote learning and begin well before high school. Our curriculum focuses on mastering the Four C’s; communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. These skills will guide students to success in any academic or career path.

As a public school, all Oregon Charter Academy coursework aligns with Oregon state standards, and we proctor Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) state testing to ensure students meet or exceed grade-level expectations. With Canvas, our online learning management system, teachers provide differentiated instruction to accommodate 504s and Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and help all students thrive.

Elementary and Middle School Programs

Education begins at the primary level, where we focus on a high-quality curriculum to support future growth. Three annual in-house diagnostic assessments for reading and mathematics ensure learning standards are met and help align instruction to student needs.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade build a strong foundation for learning. The curriculum takes a broad approach, developing basic skills in a variety of subjects to support more specialized learning later in life with areas that include:

  • Core instruction with a holistic approach to English language arts, science, and social studies

  • Mathematics

  • Physical education and health

  • Art and world languages

MIDDLE SCHOOL

As students enter middle school, coursework reflects their growing ability to address more complex subjects. Grades six through eight build upon elementary school learning with the following curriculum:

  • Humanities

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Physical education and health

  • Art and language electives

High School Programs

As students enter high school, the focus of our curriculum shifts. Courses for grades 9 to 12 are tailored to address college and career readiness. The catalog reflects course categorizations used in most public and private universities around the nation. It also expands to include unique career-based courses, preparing students to succeed in specialized fields, such as:

  • Business

  • Criminology and forensics

  • Hospitality & Tourism Management

  • Medical science

  • Technology and computer science

High school education also includes preparation for college entrance exams, including the ACT and SAT. This prep is interwoven throughout all courses in a school-wide focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and literacy to help students succeed in whatever postsecondary future they choose.

Curriculum for Special Populations

In addition to the coursework noted above, Oregon Charter Academy offers alternative education programs for elementary, middle school, and high school students. These programs focus on essential information and life skills to help students grow into conscientious consumers and capable adults. Topics of instruction include decision-making, time management, wellness, interpersonal relationships, nutrition, finance, housing, transportation, and more.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) coursework helps non-native speakers quickly acquire fluency with extensive listening, reading, writing, and speaking practice. ESL courses also introduce wide-ranging information about the customs and culture of diverse populations across the United States and prepare students for entry into our English language courses.
